New Drawing + contemplation of drawing v.s. painting

In the spring I am participating in a themed group show at Modern Eden. I'm really excited about it. This is one drawing for half of a diptych. The theme is fairy tales. You can't tell which it is now, you'll have to wait for the second piece.

I'm a little behind though. Both my drawings should be done and I should be painting by now. Not that I can't finish it in time, I usually finish things last minute, but I want to take my time and try to make a masterful piece for once.

One of my goals this year is to produce and finish more (personal/show) work. I've been struggling with finishing my work. I am really focused on drawing. The bane of my existence is to draw, my ultimate passion. When I start painting, I lose a lot of interest. As I begin to work on it, I see all the mistakes I made and how I can make a better drawing. I stop painting and I start another drawing. I've now ended up with so many half finished paintings, I'm beside myself.
I've always had a preference for drawing over painting. I believe this is why I started out with computer coloring. The drawings were still in tact, and the color only added to it. The oil paintings I've been doing, have added certain aspects, but the drawing does not hold focus. Maybe the whole problem is that I'm trying to finish a drawing by painting it an still expecting it to be a drawing. I need to experiment a lot more with painting and how I finish the work. It feels awkward right now. I have a lot of ideas.
Well art is about problem solving and I have quite a problem to solve.
If only I could go to grad school and get my Masters in painting or drawing. It isn't really possible right now though.

Just keep working.

The online store isn't up yet. I haven't worked on it much. I'm overloaded with commissions, upcoming shows, the sick urge to do my own additional work on top of it, and various things I can't mention.

Above is the 3rd head in the Apocalypse series. Pestilence, War, Famine. Death is next in the series, but I have to get a new piece of wood cut, my fourth panel was ruined.
I will have art books, prints, and tarot carrds for sale at the show this Thursday and Friday.

And here is a snap progress paintings with atmospheric washes. I am going for a thinner look, but these are far from complete. I have to go down town in a bit and set up the majority of my space for the Contrast Show. Must get supplies and finish by tomorrow's opening. I'm not using oil for these, I'm playing and experimenting as I go.

Illness, rejection, anxiety.

I've been on operation save kitty mission. I've been distracted trying to save a stray... with half a tail. Taking her to the vet bright and early tomorrow. I'm exhausted.

This drawing still isn't resolved. It's a bad scan and missing about an inch on both sides. The stars I originally drew were too detailed and distracting. I used a short model and her shortness is bothering me. She is suppose to be very thin, but I may end up having to meat her up to look more anatomically correct. Original drawing 12x24"

I had to wait until Victorian Halls' released the work first. But there are lots of goodies to look at from the project.

Above is the illustration in original color without text. It's a 4 panel cover, the lion and gazelle being the front panel. From start to finish it took a little over a week. There are lots of hidden meanings and little clues. It revolves around the seven deadly sins and the selling of one's soul. Look for the 'scepter face'. I have a painting from this past winter that was 'butter face' but no one really noticed the reference. I still need to upload my paintings. I'm so hesitant to though.

I've been pretty burned out after this project. Not to mention the unbearable heat with no A.C. and my relentless insomnia. But whenever I take down time, I come back full of inspiration and motivation. I'm finishing painting the apocalypse heads for my next NYC shows. The first two (drawings here) are going to be at Niagara on August 4th, 2011. 9pm. 112 Ave A New York, NY. Plus some new works. Prints from commissions. Oh god do I have a lot of those... so behind, but deadline hasn't passed yet. I've got time, gotta chill out.

Al Benkin will be guest curating this show with the Antagonist Art Movement.

Some very talented artists will be displaying a collection of work, 'things old, history, dream states, death and transcendence are a few concepts that levitated up through the phantom cracks.'

The next installment of The Contrast Art Show will be August 18th and 19th at 320 Studios. New paintings are already in the works and a rabbit installation is planned. Working on posters for it as well.
Most of my work is in California still from Launch. What didn't sell will be at The Artisan Gallery in Sacramento. The reception is on August 13th in conjunction with Sacramento's monthly art walk.

I'm upstate on my relaxing drawing vacation. Haven't gotten much done besides catch up on weeks of lost sleep, spending time with my sister, shopping for the first time in many seasons, lake side beach picnic, first ever pedicure (and I find the whole concept very odd, it was not for me), sketching in the garden, and doodling new ideas. I gotta get more artwork done, but ah, I feel human again.
I wanted to share a preview for the album I worked on. It is Victorian Hall's debut album, Charlatan, released by Victory Records. You can pre-order now on their website.

Goodies for you, Vacation for me

The shows this June kept me very busy. Following the shows I worked on a few commissions and had a couple paintings filmed in an upcoming independent movie set in Brooklyn called 'Leaving Circadia'.
The illustration I've been slaving over I can't show yet, have to wait for the release, but it should be in a few weeks. I drew a four panel cover for Victorian Hall's debut album released by Victory Records. It was a really awesome project.
When I have pictures and updates for both I'll be sure to share.

The Sakura Exhibition came to a close in NYC, and the prints were sold for charity for the Japanese natural disasters. 'The Lovers' print of mine, found a home, I'm very glad. The artists involved made desktop wallpapers with a sample of their work.

I have something a little more personalized for you. I made custom patterns for the Victorian Halls project, but I didn't use this one so I decided to make patterned desktop wallpapers. Whatever system or screen resolution you have, they will work. They may even work with mobile devices if you have advanced settings. When you apply it as your desktop make sure you set it to 'tile'.
I don't mind if you share them, just credit me with a link to my work.

This next week I'm going to be house sitting upstate and it is going to be a drawing and painting vacation for me. I have some personal work I want to indulge in, and a 3x3 ft private commission to get started on. Odin is coming along with me.

Faces of the Apocalypse 2/4 & 4 Current Exhibitions

I have to get in the shower and get down town a bit early to continue my painting. It always seems like I'm rushing. There are not enough hours in a day.

The Contrast Art Show is tonight. 320 West 37th Street, New York City. 14th Floor 5 pm- 1 am. Lots of art, live performances, and I'll be continuing a live painting. The first night was yesterday, if you haven't caught this show before, be there tonight!

A few blocks away the Sakura Exhibit is open until June 16th. 147 West 35th Street, New York City. Open 10 am- 8 pm, Sundays 12- 6 pm.

Opening in Amsterdam tonight at 7pm is The Pornsaints Exhibition. Open until August 31st at The Erotic Museum. Oudezijds Achterburgwal 54. Amsterdam, Netherlands.

Also going on now is Anata Gallery's online exhibit. There is a vast variety of work to look at. Art book coming soon.

First two drawings of the Faces of the Apocalypse series. I ran out of materials so there is only one being painted at the show.
Sexual conquest/pestilence, followed by war. Look out for famine and death. I already drew them, but I'm really focusing on upping my quality. I'm reworking, redrawing, repainting as much as I need to. Slower, but better in the end. These also have changes from the scan to how they look on the paper and wood. Paintings are 18x20"

Also, my new oil paintings and website update are still on the way. I said June, but I'm just too busy. I have everything photographed, I just need some time to sit down and upload, color correct, then type out annoying html for a weekend. Have a great weekend, I'll try to get the new stuff up asap!

The month of May flew by. I still have a lot to get done in not much time.

I painted my Pornsaint piece over for the show in Amsterdam, but it was too heavy (too expensive) to ship, so I had to make a print. I haven't colored a piece digitally (more than flat layouts) in nearly a year. I'm pretty content at this point. Especially since I've re done it at least 3 times in different mediums. I've had so many issues with this piece from start to finish. I still have to print, sign and ship it, let's hope there will be no more delays.

April Shows 2011

I'm not in my studio. I should have posted before I left the city. I'm in the middle of a bunch of projects and trying to use all these opportunities to show my work at the same time. I think I've maybe taken on a little too much. April is my Birthday month, it reminds me of my mortality. There is so much I want to do, that I have not yet.

Opening in an hour is the 2011 Sakura Exhibition in Tokyo. Although I'm not sure what is going on. I haven't watched the news yet today, I was told there was another earthquake. My thoughts and prayers are with those who are suffering. If you would like to donate to the victims, you can purchase a beautiful poster on the Sakura website. All profit will be donated through The Japanese Red Cross Society.

This is the first time I've shown my work in Asia. I jumped at the invitation. I colored two of my drawings digitally using newer programs (not completely happy, have to get my old programs back). The files were to be sent digitally and printed out on location.

The show is displaying in New York City in June, you can read the details here. I'll be posting more information closer to the opening.

Tomorrow night at 6 p.m. there is an opening at Lovebird Studio in Rosendale, New York. Most of my originals are on display along with some newly presented prints. The other artists include Lea Sophie, Fionn Reilly, Scott Michael Ackerman, Al Ackerman, Paul Heath, and Amy Ackerman.

I've picked out a few pieces I made over the summer and am building on them. I have to finish some works from that time (well completely rework them now) that will be incorporated into this series later for upcoming shows. This drawing is for a 10" diameter wood panel, some of the negative space will be sanded away (from the paper).
The digital color is really sketchy in this one. About to start the next layer of paint. I'd take progress shots, but my time is scarce.

My friend of mine Sky Shatz, graduate of SVA, did a silk screen collaboration with one of the butterflies from the Butterfly Tragedy series. A few are already gone from my stock after Bleak March. Contrast is an art exhibition which shows every few months in Manhattan at 320 Studios. I've been participating from the start, and it's been an evolution. The artists vary greatly in style, medium, generation, and background. Every show the standards have gotten higher, the displays more complex, and performances have become intense. It's a show run by artists working together, directed by Rustam Davletshin with the support of John Stavros, who is the owner of 320 Studios, an old friend of Andy Warhol's, and a co-creator of studio 54.

I volunteered to do the posters for this show, something we haven't yet done. The shows have been amazing visually but we need to get the word out there. That being said, please feel free to share the information about this show. If you are in the area, make it to 320 Studios on March 25th or 26th. It's very close to Penn Station, in the fashion district. The show is held in a window-lined penthouse suite, it's terrace overlooking the Hudson River and downtown Manhattan.

Being an illustrator at Pratt, they made me jump through some graphic design hoops. I'll share with you the project for Contrast.

Eviscerated Unicorn

An interpretation of the struggle between good and evil. It's a piece I've wanted to do for a long time but I hadn't developed the image in my mind until recently.
This is a section from the drawing for a 54x20" triptych to be painted with oil on paper and wood. I've cut off the unfinished section because of how erotic it looks. It's designed to be a phallic symbol but for some reason when the serpent (hydra) isn't drawn, the silhouette is much more obvious. You'll have to wait to see the figure in her contemplation with the beast.

I'm buried, and kind of made a mess of all my work because I keep going back to this. Everything will get done... shhh. I'm making a point to update my blog more...

Happy 2011.

I've been dealing with a lot, then took a needed break. Back with new work for my upcoming show. I'll also be participating in the second installation of The Contrast Art Show.

January 27th & 28th. 320 Studios. 14th floor, 320W 37th St. New York, NY.

For a 24"x18" wood panel to be painted.

I did this doodle at my friend's and started a looser painting with it. Camera phone, excuse the quality. I have my SLR now but not a connection cord. When I get going on the paintings I'll take some progress shots.

Reworked again. I'm including two of the faces from the first three and these for a series of 5. Face, phallic fox, face, fox, face.

My friend gave me a face shaped canvas, same place I got the rabbit shaped ones. Just going along with the portraits I've been doing. I had the idea of the room being filled with the forest paintings and have little faces staring out, like hidden mirrors.

My solo show opens January 22nd. I'll be doing a large installation painting through the weeks until the closing on February 3rd which begins The Year of the Rabbit.

Rabbit Faces 3/6

I've done about 10 portraits, and I've only kept my favorites. I'll be doing one series of 3 for the Ceres show, and a coupling series of 3 when I rework the second part of my concept. Probably not for this show. 30x40 is coming along. My camera cord has broke... but I'm going to be getting an SLR soon. Now I can't even take crappy photos... unless I resort to my "smart" phone. You'll just have to wait.

These are the scans with a little digital color of the ones I kept.

I'll be having a large selection of prints and proofs at the upcoming show 'Last Chance' at the Marketplace Gallery this Friday. I'm bringing my older work from Pratt to hopefully get off my hands. If you are looking to get an original, I'm pricing these under $75 for 4 and 5 color silk screens. If you can't make it to Albany you can still purchase work. I'll post pictures as soon as they are available. You can contact me or the gallery if you are interested. The Ceres show is less than 3 weeks away. Take a peek of what I'm working on for it.

First finished drawing for the bunny portraits. There will be a total of 6. To be painted.

Commissioned mini triptych, 9 x 5" Drawing to be painted.

You can see the panels I'm using here. I started on watercolor paper, but decided I wanted to use oil to finish, so switched to cotton rag (drawing above is on). The portrait seen here may be scrapped. I found the rabbit canvases at Pearl Paint on Canal Street and had to get them. The rabbit has been a key symbol in my work for years, I've been using them a lot recently. February 3rd marks the new year of the rabbit and it's my year.

Why so small? I'm traveling for the Holiday, I'll need to take some work with me. I'm also working on the new 40x30", drawing in previous post. I'd like to do an additional medium sized piece as well, but time will surely run out.

Fishy Update

Something fishy is going on. A moment ago it said my blog had been removed, got to some page about suspicious activity, changed my password, then it was all better. If you know what that might mean, let me know. I had an issue with someone spamming my blog with porn links a few months ago. Why do people put so much effort into causing grief for others?

The drawing for the 2nd 40"x30" scanned and given a little color.

The shows went very well. I sold at Beast, The Marketplace, and The Contrast Art show. More shows are being planned now. The next one is in Chelsea, and I'm over the moon excited. It's December 9th at the Ceres Gallery. I'll post more details about it closer to the date.

I've been traveling, then got quite ill, had to replace both my tablet and my computer. I now have a 27" imac, it's a beautiful piece of machinery. Ha, now that I'm oil painting, I get a nice computer. I still need it for my illustration jobs though. A bigger studio is gonna have to wait...

I have 4 new paintings, but they are not in my studio. Before the opening in Chelsea I will spend whatever needs to get spent to have my work photographed properly for a website update. It's frustrating that I don't have my new paintings accessible online.

October 28th, The Thursday before Halloween Mike A. will be presenting the 3rd Annual FANGORIA, a Group Horror Art Show. It's at G2 on Ave A. between 6th and 7th. NYC. Don't miss it!

This is the piece I'm working on for the show. I'm also juggling my internship, a large freelance project, and prepping for all my next shows. I should be doing back work too but I'm just putting it aside yet again. Ahh. I could take out a coffee plantation...

Scanned with a little digital color. I have a few working titles...

It's 8"x12", refreshing (and realistic) after doing the 30"x40", but I plan to have another 30"x40" for The Contrast Art Show.

Materials that go into my paintings: gamsol, cold pressed linseed oil, thickened linseed oil, matte medium, array of sandpaper/sandblocks, 3 ply oak panels, cotton rag paper, workable fixative, oils, graphite, colored pencils, sable to boars hair brushes- synthetic and authentic, drafting tools, various erasers and a lot of love. I was at the art store today and realizing how often I've been going. I'm starting to buy in bulk, hard to carry by heels and subway though.

Again, don't miss this. It's gonna be big.

I need to take good photos, these are just snaps (I was painting up until the morning of the show). These are from Beast. I sold two originals (rabbits: Chloe and Sophia) and a print. It will be up for the rest of the month.

"The Contrast Art Show is an art exhibition which puts together a variation of artists, artistic movement groups, and several upcoming galleries in an attempt to show the rising trend of art in New York City. The participants include members of groups such as: the Pudding Factory Art Collective, The New York Art Page, The Art Society for the Advancement of the Spine, the Marketplace Gallery and The American Art Gallery; all together coming in at upwards of 30 artists.

Helping to oversee the exhibition will be John Stavros the Owner of 320 Studios, an old friend of Andy Warhol’s, and a co-creator of studio 54. On his part will be exhibited a display of never before viewed works by Antonio Lopez, and a hopeful presentation of The Sergeant Pepper Lonely Hearts dolls, the only copy existing in the United States. Additionally, a live body painting session will be presented by Ocean Clark, adding to the kick off for the show."

I've been busy, and not feeling so well. The weather knocks me out when its cold one day and hot the next... This is what I've been working on.

Currently Untitled, 30"x40" I'm working on a large piece for Beast. I plan two more the same size by the December show. It's not nearly complete, but it's getting there... need to stuff more rabbits into the lion and draw the fleeing souls.

Trying something a little different. I've executed the concept as simple as possible and tried to make inexpensive sell-able work. The idea originally was about individualism, but after reading this very moving report it shifted a bit to contemplating the woman's identity and where she can fit into her given society. It went along with my frustrating of not selling my more... 'adult' pieces and some events in my personal life. Blah blah blah, I could talk about how I got here all day. The title of the series of eight is 'Casualty'. I anticipate this work to sell, and if/when I do, the series will evolve. A new rabbit with a new name (keeping the first letter) will replace the sold rabbit, always keeping eight. It adds another dimension to what I'm trying to communicate.

They will be cut out into circles and mounted to white board.

The openings were a lot of fun, went well. Lots of stuff in the works now. I'm still exhausted. I'll share some event pictures and details later.

Hung these wet, guy's arm got smudged. I think I'll work on him a little more before the next show. I'll have to shoot these again with an SLR for better quality, and some of the previous ones with better lighting. Grr.

Convergence NYC: Art Benefit

"Convergence-The approach toward a definite value, a definite point, a common view or opinion, or toward a fixed or equilibrium state.

This “Convergence” was established in 2009 by two people who were separated by the Atlantic, and a few countries, who had the same vision. This vision was to come together and not only raise awareness for a non-profit that helps families of the military[Operationhomefront.net], but to also raise awareness of the effect Art has had and can continue to have on people’s lives. This idea was that like war, art can greatly affect people’s lives.

In the spring of 2008 a soldier was put on orders to dabble in the effects of war herself. Over a year she documented and wrote stories about how the “war” in Afghanistan was affecting the people who not only she worked with but also the people of Afghanistan. She came to a point where she found it hard to express herself through the orders. At this point she really didn’t know what to do.

Contacting her friend in the states daily impregnated an idea of greatness, a convergence if you will. Her friend had the idea that maybe; just maybe, they should try to create an art show that will change the world around them. And from that point on, that was all she could think about.

And from that one shot of an idea, “Convergence NYC” was born.

People sent art from all over the globe to present in a show that would be held in a small part of Bagram Airfield, Afghanistan. It gave the soldiers present in that area a moment to relieve themselves of the obvious surrounding burdens, and relax into a moment of creativity.

After seeing the response in Afghanistan, the soldier and her friend were blessed with the possibility to have this show displayed in one of the most historical places art has ever been a presence in; the 69th Infantry Regiment Armory on 68 Lexington Ave. NYC, NY.

For those who do not know, In 1913 the Association of American Painters and Sculptors put together the International Exhibition of Modern Art. This show displayed over 1,250 paintings, sculptures, and decorative works by over 300 American and European artist. Ex: Marcel Duchamp, Vincent van Gogh, Edouard Manet, Pablo Picasso, etc.…

This was one of the most groundbreaking events in American Art history.

The idea is to keep this tradition true. We want to open the Armory once again so the public can view the Art that is present all around them. From Fine artist to street artist, we want everyone to “Converge” and bring back the true Art in this world, the Art that people spend lifetimes making so that people like you can embrace, enjoy and forget where you are.

Convergence NYC is the next generation of artist coming to you from all over the world to slap you in the face with a movement that is going to Rock the Art world. There will be bands there will be Art and there will be lovers of art mingling once again in the Walls of the Armory. Come join the Market Place Gallery in August , we hope to see you there."

This Thursday the 22nd, 'No Biting' will open at 6 p.m, on the 14th floor of 320 West 37th Street in New York City

It will be open the following day until 11 p.m. Don't miss it! It's in a lofted penthouse studio suite, with a balcony looking out onto the river and the NYC skyline. I am told there is live music and free drinks.

There will be a selection of twenty five+ artists including my dear friend Maria Ruggiano. Rustam Davletshin, an artist I graduated with, is one of the people who put this all together. This is a show by artists for artists. Some of the other artists include; Tracy Von Becker, Al Benkin, Edgar Gonzalez, and Jorge Valdes.

And percentage wise, 75%, 100%, 90%, 75%. I have all tonight and tomorrow, I actually don't feel rushed, then again I've been working on and off these for a month+. I've also been amazed to see these pieces dry in about 24-40 hours. It's hot and I use a lot of medium. I changed the colors a bit on the Honey piece, she isn't going into the NYC show It needs another coat this one got too wet to keep working. The Nyack show, they keep pushing back the dates. It actually worked out so I didn't have to split the work. I think the pieces that will go into the NYC show are these three, plus the two oils from the Cornwall show, a couple of my favorite digital pieces and if room maybe a silk screen. I can't decide until I have it there and hang it which will be Thursday afternoon. Busy week ahead of me. Ah.

I've been painting away. I'd post more progress shots but the pictures come out pretty poor. Grainy, yellow, dark. I would like an SLR. I also think I need a new tablet. I spilled by water on it last night... still isn't working.

I revised the drawing of Peter for the triptych.

The sizes are all different now because I had to work with what I had (material wise). I picked these three size wood panels to hang in a particular way. I'll reveal some back story on the project when it's more complete.

80 degrees is too hot

I had my hometown opening upstate last weekend, a benefit for animal rescue groups on the East river with some pieces donated earlier this week, I have a show opening in Nyack just a few weeks. Busy, and despite this good fortune, I've still been hit with an insane stroke of bad luck. You know one of those days where everything just goes wrong? It's been a perpetual void of that for a few weeks now. My spirit...

I have to go back to barrow and take better pictures of the new paintings with a tripod and lighting tools. There were 20 pieces in all. Below are just my favorites and what isn't in my portfolio.

Working title is "Secrets". The drawing and some digital color to break up the shapes. It needs some more work. A little more space after the top of her head. What I plan to do is have pieces of the drawing on paper composed on a wood panel, and sand away sections. I started doing this process with another painting and I liked the texture. I bought new brushes and medium, have to finish this and the two other in progress oils done for the show.

Oh I changed my blog around a little. I like this layout. I need a larger header...

Crazy Week

Alright.

Personal affairs.

A solid week of insomnia.

I got pretty sick.

My phone died (I smashed it).

I got a new phone, a smart phone.

My computer got a virus, thank God for smart phone.

Went upstate for Memorial Day, bought 20+ frames for upcoming shows.

I had to reformat my drive.

The color profiles on my printer out of wack, I had to run to a print shop in the a.m. to print invites.

Everything should have been mailed yesterday.

News for a show in Nyack in July. (details later)

So, no new work finished. I've also got a ton of missed calls and am missing all my contacts. Things still aren't settled here in my studio, please reach me by e-mail. Especially if you've been trying to reach me. That means you mystery number.

And finally, I can get back to work. Getting all the frames done was a huge load off.

This is barely even 2 hrs into both pieces from a few days ago. Also, I received my business cards in the mail. I thought it better to hand these out like candy and save the large postcards for mailers to potential clients.

Also, I don't know why but I keep getting Asian Porn spam comments on my blog. Please stop doing that, it's very rude.

Excuse the lack of updates, I've been working on a handful of oil paintings slowly. Insomnia. Time to get back on track.

Francesco D' Isa invited me to do a piece for Pornsaints. I'm working on this portrait of May Ling Su. I reworked it a lot, the drawing ended up a bit choppy. I'm going to redraw it onto my surface anyway.

I'm not settled on a title. My thoughts are still on this. If you are curious, I suggest reading about Pornsaints, the essay is really interesting. I decided to work around a theme of body fluids. Sex & Religion, Grotesque/displeasing to the senses & Sweet/pleasing to the senses...

I started with some posters and postcards of my favorite work. Then designed some products specifically for the store that looked best. Obviously spot illustrations work better for a majority of the products, so some of my older, but favorite work is included. I couldn't pass up designing some shoes either.

If you have any requests... meaning you will purchase the product, I'll list it in the store. Suggestions are always welcome too. Some work that isn't my favorite happens to be viewer's favorites. Such as the Old Ocean piece and Puzzle girl. Concept wise, yes, but technically, I did them in school rushed while taking 18 credits of crazy Pratt classes. Maybe I'll recycle the concepts into better executed pieces in the future, that seems to work really well for me when I'm uninspired... reinventing past ideas with new perspective.

I turned 23 on the 23rd. If you live in NYC check out one of Alice's Tea Cup locations. This tea is amazing. They gave me a complimentary cupcake... but it got smooshed. I also saw Alice in Wonderland finally. I knew I'd be disappointed. Jan Svankmajer puts Tim Burton to shame any day of the week.

Fool and the Fall Final

I feel overwhelmed. I fear failure. Friday is my Birthday.

I've been working on this for what seems like forever. From sketch to drawing to color to type, a lot, a lot of back and forth, with time gaps in between. You may have seen this a ton of times already, but here it is all finished. I've been staring at it too long to say much about the work, but I love the concept and can't wait to see it produced. Details about that when I get them.

Peter Red and the Wolf Tryptic

I'm very pleased with this. I've had pent up energy waiting to be released on this. I should have been doing client projects, but it was worth it to use the energy on this while I had it.

I started working on the center in the wee morning and just finished a little ago, my hand is killing me. Is that normal for your hand to ache after drawing for a long period of time or is there something wrong with me? I hope not.

I'll discuss the piece a little later, but just to repeat the theme, it's part of my personal thesis... coming of age.

Two parts of a triptych I'm working on in between jobs. I'm still working on Peter more, I was falling asleep by the end of it. The triptych includes the folklore from Peter & the Wolf and Little Red Ridding Hood constructed in the message I'm sending (main theme: another coming of age as that is part of my personal thesis I'm working on). I thought of better ideas for the center piece so I'm reworking that. I'm not even sure on the size/placing.

I'm heading up to my Sister's for Easter. I'm hoping to do a lot of work up there, I bet it's pretty. Maybe I'll bring my camera. I'll show some sneak peaks of the projects I'm working when I come back.

I was featured on 3.25.10, check it out daily.

I've been feeling pretty crappy (uninspired). Everything I draw this week is just blah, and I end up crumpling or ripping it up. I'm just about finished with the painting for the CA show, shipping it out Monday as I wait for the last coat to dry. Picture soon.

I decided to go to the book store, get out of the studio, maybe get some new inspiration. I ended up finding the ad for the show in CA in the newest Juxtapoz.

Then while browsing the art book section found Hunt & Gather. Wow it already hit the shelves, and in Barnes and Noble? Cool. I thought it was just going to be on Amazon. There was plastic on the cover, so I couldn't look through it. My copy is in the mail. Waiting (That's Sky holding the book).

I got a nude figure book, I like to stock up on reference material. Didn't get anything inspirational, there were lots of kids climbing all over the book shelves. I didn't really get a chance to look. However I feel motivated to keep working and move on with greater things. By this time the work in Hunt & Gather is not my best, and I'm really aching to do new personal thesis pieces that blow my old work away. I feel it. I need the space and time. And to finish back work, ugh ugh ugh. One drawing at a time :|

So last night I finally got back to fixing my site. If you take a look, let me know if you find any errors. I already know I need to fix the leading, though it looks good on my screen. The Linked In link is incorrect. Want to add a FAQ in the "about" section. Want to add information in the shop section. I also need to organize my Etsy site and start selling work. I have to work on back projects this week and fix the site. Any suggestions for the website are welcome.

Stupid Cat and Sky

Apartment (plumbing) issues on Saturday and it was so beautiful out, so I went with Sky to union square to sell prints do promotion and he sold his teeshirts and work. We didn't get a good spot because we got down there so late, and didn't sell that much. Wasted time :|
I woke up on Sunday to find that the water I was using to clean brushes with was knocked over onto my computer- tablet and keyboard. I wonder what furry little monster could have done that. I couldn't work on my computer not being able to use my tablet or keyboard. All the commands I was sending were wrong. I couldn't even print the things out I needed to work on. Right now it's working. I think giving it a day let the water inside evaporate. A keyboard and mouse will be dropped off to me in a bit as back up. I really hope it just wasn't working temporarily. $200-$500 for another tablet, ugh.
So maybe I can finally get to my website this week and back work. No new clients until I catch up. I'm locking myself in here and praying for no more distractions, hold ups, or problems. I think I'll get a smart phone for my birthday to help me be more organized and beep at me when I'm not doing enough work. And something to boost my reception.. is there such a thing?

Odin (The God)

I kind of had a crappy unproductive weekend, and was a bit stuck on this, but I worked through it, I think.

This is a commission for a friend, which I swore to never do again, but she is an exception.

Odin has an eight legged horse, two ravens, and two wolves. The first sketch I did it was too busy, then I did more of a portrait, and it was too boring. That's were the birds out of context with the other sketch come from. So I settled on this, and I'm happy with it for a quick commission. No eight legged horse...

Now I'm doodling with some ink...

I was too tired and got distracted by a friend yesterday, but I got to the art store... and they didn't have two of the things I needed. Gurr.

This is finished digitally. Soon I'll print it out and start working on it more.

The sun is coming up..

.. or maybe it's already up. I can't see from my underground studio. (Yeah that's what I'll call this place). I'm really excited to finish coloring this, I can see it being my best piece to date. I've been working with more colors (larger range of value), and richer (more saturated and of darker value) colors. When I'm done with this (what is just blocks of flat color not blended is unfinished) I'll be printing it out on cotton rag paper. Then I'm going to seal it and start painting into it. It could be a complete failure, but I printed out some work on cut down stone henge and it seemed like a way to go. I've been trying to merge the two (digital + oil paint) for a while and haven't yet figured out the best way for all needs of the work to be met.
I have to go downtown. I have some work to do and I'm in desperate need to go to the art store. I'm ticked, I missed using two killer coupons for Blick. Why does everything close so early? The work plan for the week is to finish this, a commission of Odin the Norse God, secret children's book, re design my website, call a bunch of people (if you're reading this, I'll call you soon, I promise D:), then visit my Sister and friends upstate. I really just rather lock myself in here for a few more days and make a few more killer pieces for the update of my site. I want all pieces in my portfolio to be as awesome as I perceive this will be, 95%, With all Due Respect, and other recent favorites of mine. I'm completely and totally on fire as far as artistic drive and inspiration are concerned. Kind of losing track of time though...

Check out Sodium Magazine's #2 issue. My work is inside. Nothing you haven't seen, but the other artists and designers I'm sandwiched in between are pretty cool.

This is the next group show I'll be in. It's the show I mentioned in the previous post, for the arrival of Hunt & Gather. It will be at the Thinkspace Gallery in C.A. (I think I originally thought it was in London. I'm all confused, bad artist). The opening will be Friday, Aprill 9th. Click the image or website for more details.

I was hesitant about doing that, but a bunch of people were friending me for my work and I don't think they want to see my friends and I chatter about nonsense. Just another way to stay in touch with events, shows, and work of mine if you have the interest.

Spring, come faster...

Holy crap I've been busy. Let's see, I've been making progress on my secret children's book project. I was freelancing with Biolumina one week, and got a bunch of new projects in between. I met some cool freelancers there. I lost the paper, but I'll have to share their work. Last weekend I dropped everything because I was called in last minute by Skygraphx for Webster's Hall'sQuarterly Art Soiree. It was a blast. I did fashion and promotional modeling for Skygraphx and had a selection of my prints there. Met some awesome people and artists.

I've been working on and off this for a while now. A lot of back and forth. I'm still not sure it's done yet (besides text) but I'm really liking how it's looking. It's for album art inside and outside (duh).

I was asked to make revision on this, and I was thinking about doing so for a while. The chest was too fake looking... I essentially just gave her a boob job :O Looks way much better.

"Meat my Sins" This is a new drawing for an oil painting to be shown at the London Miles Gallery for the arrival of the art book by Tina Ziegler; Hunt & Gather. It's a collection of artists works, mine included. We'll all be submitting a 12"x12" for this event. I have a slightly different method for going about this piece. Can't wait...

I got a wonderful e-mail the other day from a young lady in Russia. I was floored, so humbled. It's such a huge compliment. She got a tattoo of one of my earlier works. Rock on!!

Winter Valentine

I've been missing for a week or so now. I was really sick then stuck in snow storms. Just got back into the studio last night. I'm making Valentine's for people I care about and getting back to my projects.
I'm learning a lot. I'm thinking a lot. I'm working unusually slow. I feel like everything is stalling me, but I could be putting more effort in. I'm tired. Very tired. I thought I was done with that small wood painting (posted a few times before), but I keep wanting to make changes. Reworking the face and needing deeper shadows on the bedding.

Arrows and LillyPads

I've been working on this project for a few weeks. This is just a piece of it, we're still discussing changes and I'm lacking templates for packaging. I want to keep it a little bit mysterious until I have something to really impress with. It's for the album art of musician, Mitchell Sheldon's, EP.
My life has been hectic, I need to sort some things out. I feel positive though.
I noticed the other day that I can see the metacarpals in my hands. I wonder what that means.

2010 Slowly

Has it really been a month since I last posted? Life has been crazy. The holidays have passed now and I'm ready to kick it into high gear. I've not nearly done enough (finished) work. But I've been working on a top secret project, beginning stages of new freelance projects, keeping up my sketch books, and these two pieces between everything going on.

Here is an update on the small wood panel oil painting. I sat and stared at it for a few weeks before I dropped any pigment on top. I was ready to trash it for non artistic reasons but figured I'd just work through it and make changes to the content as I go. It's already shifted a lot from what I originally wanted for this. Bad photo...

This is a drawing from one of my sketchbooks I decided to paint (digitally). It's more of a study, and won't end up in my portfolio. Subconscious portrait.

Inspired to paint. I'm doing this mini painting as a warm up and experiment. Sketching pieces for Bureau project. Getting Otto and Omar just right.
You can see some of my process in the photo. Idea thumbnails in my sketchbook, a rough composition sketch to transfer to wood panel and the drawing on the panel. I got an anatomy book and some anatomy xeroxes for reference. Organs and bonessss....

So, this has been un-canceled. The publisher really liked the sketch I was told. I still need to make adjustments and corrections for both. Like her overly bendy leg.
It took me a while to get the colors right. With a lot of objects in the piece, getting the right hierarchy can be difficult. Simultaneous contrast gets tricky. I just need to paint more.
I'm so beat.

Oh, I'm so excited. Tina Ziegler (manager of the London Miles Gallery and director of this project), sent me the cover image for Hunt & Gather. It will be released internationally in February (2010)... wow... I just said twenty-ten... how future-y. (Too much coffee sorry). I hope this interests you to buy it when it comes out. Now that work is older though, I must have submitted it last winter. Exposure is exposure...

I'm working on too may things at once. New work soon. How long have I been awake? How mangy Burroughs have I been in and back these past two days? Have I eaten?! Yeah... this is when I do my best work... as long as I don't pass out... or run out of cigarettes and coffee.

I took that stupid banner down. I added a picture of myself. Is that unprofessional? I really need some guidance, I feel like such an idiot and that I'm doing everything wrong. Mostly with everything that doesn't involve me drawing or painting, but dealing with others and representing myself.
I'll figure it out eventually. People skills were never my strong suit. If anyone would like to throw some advice at me, I'm open.

This was originally a sketch for the lyric book I'm collaborating on. I was accidentally told the wrong song, so this is rejected. Boo... because I really like this. I'm finishing it for myself.
Here is the corrected drawing with some color added digitally. It's planned to be a limited color piece. The Antler Room piece I really want to finish too... too busy :/

"Ninety-five Percent" was the song it was drawn to. "Feline" is the renamed title. Here is an excerpt from that song if you're curious:

I did my new mailers, postcards, yesterday. I picked two pieces that I think have the most mass appeal. The Front image is tame enough to be acceptable for story book publishing, and content wise is heavy enough for editorial. Its a good example of a full color piece of mine. I took her nipples out and corrected some bad anatomy. The piece on the back, again can go for children's or editorial. The limited color is more appealing for newspaper and magazines. I plan to send out a heavier piece of mine to just magazines, galleries... places a nude girl being eaten out by a wolf won't be offensive.
I got rounded corners, which I think looks awesome. I hope they print alright :/

With All Due Respect

Minor changes... more substance to the ground and color adjustments. I may do a few more for the book, if time permits. I'm really liking the freedom of this project.

Honestly this piece was a bit of a struggle at first after working with real media (mostly oil) for the summer. I now appreciate both digital and oil painting differently and I still want to find the best way to translate my work from start to finish. Either way, working with real oil has really helped some aspects when going back to digital. The mark making is what still frustrates me and what I had kept going over.
